a powerful team: label & artist
So, how came the founding of Selma Records? Here are three pictures:
... and the beautiful name of this record label, it is dedicated to perhaps the most gentle creature that ever walked on four legs on earth.
.. . a little story
Making a record from PVC is fundamentally not eco-friendly. This is a major problem, but one that many pressing plants are addressing and taking various approaches to reduce their "footprint."
An interesting article on this can be found here: (external link to "dj-lab.de" in German). The options range from meager emissions offsets to 99% scrap recovery at the plant to using recycled pellets, but then again that means a reduction in quality.
After all, a modern vinyl record is quite robust and can be played for many decades if treated well, and certainly in the future, thanks to the simple analog principle of mechanical tracking. This would be impossible with a CD (which also cannot be produced sustainably), which otherwise has the advantage that it contains 100% of the sound of the master.
So what about streaming? Isn't that fundamentally more environment-friendly than a physical medium? The point is this - it depends, firstly, on the way the streaming provider hosts its offering technically, e.g. where the servers are located and how they are operated. Second, on your listening behavior. If you're constantly streaming your favorite songs, you're not being sustainable. If you want to listen to them more often, download them and make local playlists, even on your mobile device if you like to listen to music on the go.
Here's an interesting link to do that: (external link to "utopia.com" in German). There is also a Greenpeace studio linked there that reveals the differences between various providers.
As a production studio and music label, we also have to ask ourselves how we can act as sustainably as possible.
For our mixing suite (and also for our web services), we use clean energy (Green Energy) and do not use equipment that consumes an unnecessary amount of electricity.
Most of the equipment in the studio is used and maintained for many years, overhauled and repaired when necessary. The heart of our mobile set (see STUDIO) is a 12 year old high quality audio interface that was recently upgraded to the latest technology (fast network interface).
It runs perfectly well with a Mac computer from 2013 with the latest software.
Selma Records is a slick indie label, currently operated in the form of a one-man business. The label's mission is to make a solid statement on the vast playing field of contemporary music by releasing original, high quality music - sometimes danceable, sometimes just for listening, compositions and sound art.
We are excited to start making releases with our artists in a variety of styles.
We are connected by the awareness that all people live in a common, indivisible world and that we all have our own beat, but connected to others. Culture is exchange. Music is our drive.
Art? Statement? Both crucial
